Name: "Blind" Hector Santiago
Hometown: Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico
Height: 6'1
Weight: 200
Build: Eddie Guerrero from back in the day/ cruiserweight
Alignment: Face
Personal History (Again, you may remain brief): Hector's been a gambler all his
life. He'll bet on anything. Not just the winners and losers of anything either.
He'll bet on how long it takes the bus to get from the hotel to the stadium then
from the stadium to the strip club after the game. ANYTHING.
This is how Hector got involved in wrestling. He had some friends that wrestled in a backyard promotion in
his native Puerto Rico, and he routinely went to bet on the matches. There was
one guy he always bet to lose, and the guy always did just that. One day,
hanging out before a card, Hector made a comment to a friend that "Betting
against this guy is the easiest money I've ever made." The guy overheard him and
challenged him to match.
Having no training, Hector lost. But he was intrigued, and he began training
hard. He soon beat the man he'd lost to, and he beat a few more people. He won
every title the backyard fed had to offer, and wrestled in all parts of Puerto
Rico.
One night, he was wrestling a match out behind a bar near the beach, and he was
discovered by Bruce Saotome, who was on vacation and at the bar looking for
women to add to his orgy later that evening. Saotome brought him to the United
States and entered him into a small fed, Northern California Grappling, which at
the time was being used as a developmental camp for Paradise Championship Wrestling.
Hector got good, and decided to keep doing this. Gambling would always be his
hobby, but this would be his job, and his love. Saotome taught him to respect
the sport, and made sure Hector never bet on his own matches.
Of course, that didn't stop Hector from gambling whenever he could. One night
NGC did a rare show outside of Northern California, in Las Vegas. After the
show, Hector went to Binion's, decided to enter a satellite for the World Series
of Poker on a whim.. and won, gaining entry to the Main Event.
Hector's legend was born at that tournament, the 2002 World Series of Poker. He
played well and he got lucky, and he made it to the final table. After a couple
of hours, it was just Hector and one other man playing heads-up for all the
marbled - that being world-renowned player Phil Hellmuth.
Hellmuth and Hector played a couple hands, Hellmuth taunting the rookie all the
time, until finally, Hector got tired of listening to it. The next hand was
dealt, and Hector went all-in before the flop - without looking at his cards, or "blind" if you
will. The two were close on chips, and Hellmuth also went all-in.
Hector never looked at his cards, and refused to turn them over until all five
community cards were dealt. The cards looked grim, but Hector won, giving him
2.5 million dollars.
Hector never turned pro in poker, though, and kept working up through the ranks.
Now, he's in USJP.. the biggest and best-funded company he's been a part of thus
far.
Entrance Music: "Let It Ride" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive
Entrance Effects: Nothing. He likes to keep his stuff simple. All it does is the
lights take a greenish tint around the entrance.. the color of money, which
hector has a lot of from winning that tourney.
Entrance Mannerisms: Hector is a no-nonsense guy. He brings a bottle of water
with him to the ring, and he'll drink a little of it on the way down sometimes.
He slaps a lot of hands, tosses the bottle of water and his sunglasses into the
crowd before he gets into the ring.
Wrestling Style (Mat Technician, Power, Brawler, Lucha Libre, etc): Hector likes
to think of himself as someone who can do everything pretty well, but he's not
the best at anything. Probably be a cross between a Matt Hardy, Dean Malenko and
Ken Shamrock. Bruce taught him the martial arts stuff, Bruce's tag team partner,
L.A. Jackson taught him the high-flying stuff, and he picked up the technical
stuff in Puerto Rico. He can do all three pretty well.
