Ring Name: "Twilight Angel" Sonya Benedict
Real Name: Sonya Paquita Benedict
Date of Birth: June 14, 1984
Age: 23
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 133 lbs
Hometown: Miami, Florida
Allignment: Face
Looks: Although she is part Cuban, Sonya's complexion barely shows it. To say that she is a beautiful young woman is an understatement. Sonya has long black hair and an athletic build. She also has brown eyes, and there is a small pink streak in her hair. She currently sports two tattoos: a band of metal skulls wrapping around her right arm just above the elbow, and the kanji symbols for family down her left arm near the bicep.
Attire: Sonya wears a turquoise with black trimmed sports bra, fine fishnets covering her arms and upper torso, leaving her well defined abs exposed. She also wears forest green camouflage shorts. She rounds out her gear with black kneepads and boots, with turquoise laces on the boots.
Out-of-Ring Attire: Sonya can usually be seen in a leather jacket, an assortment of t-shirts, sweatpants, jeans, shorts, and sometimes even a skirt if she's in the mood.
Bio: Although most of the Benedict family lives in Michigan, Sonya's parents moved her to Miami so they could take care of her ailing grandmother. Inheriting the Benedicts' competitive spirit, Sonya got into Tae-Kwon-Do at a very young age. Her father felt that studying a martial art would teach her valuable lessons to prepare her for life. Sonya stuck with it, never once considering the possibility of quitting. She is now one of the most talented young fighters in the country.
In early 2000, Rick Benedict, her uncle, came to visit the family. He revealed to them that he opened a wrestling school in Grand Rapids no more than a year before, and that Sonya's cousin Myra was doing exceptionally well there. Sonya watched tapes of the school's training sessions, and quickly became addicted to the sport, wanting to become a wrestler herself. And so, not long after Rick returned to Grand Rapids, Sonya enrolled in a local wrestling school.
Sonya never quite grasped the technical side of wrestling for which her cousin excelled so well in. Throughout her training, she came more and more efficient at brawling and high flying. Plus, she's learned to incorporate her martial arts into her wrestling as well.
She debuted in both NEO-Pro and the Universal Wrestling Federation. However, having lost her debuts in both companies, she didn't get off to a good start, though she put up one Hell of a fight in both matches, even passing out in her cousin Myra's Venom Clutch when they fought at UWF's Eve of Destruction PPV!
Sonya then turned on her boyfriend Chad Grimsson in favor of Jamie Underwood in UWF. However, it turned out to be a coup to gain valuable information from Underwood's friends EW4 and Fatality. Sonya showed where she really stood at UWF's Gold Rush PPV, turning on Underwood during his match with Sabbath. As a result she was suspended indefinitely by Edmond Winston IV for her treachery.
In NEO-Pro, Sonya was involved in a big feud with the Women's Champion, Talia Wichzini. Sonya was on the receiving end of beatings much of the time, including a backstage attack where Talia had thrown her head-first into a mirror. The feud came to a head at NEO's Until Death Do Us Part PPV, in a Barbed Wire Hell Match no less. Both women fought long and hard. In the end, it took two Goddess Cutters for Wichzini to gain the victory and retain the title..
In the UWF, Sabbath settled his feud with Jamie Underwood with a key stipulation. If he won, Sonya's suspension would be lifted. Luckily for her, he did win, and Sonya's once again back in the UWF. Since then she has been involved in a feud with Angel, who has continually played mind games with her. Angel claimed that Sonya was like her cousin Myra. And proof of that was alleged repeated attacks by Sonya on Angel. The two then fought in an I Quit Match on the SNR after Gold Rush. Sonya got the win after hitting her Burning Sunset from the top turnbuckle to the floor, knocking Angel unconscious and guaranteeing her some hospital time.
Gimmick: A four year veteran of the sport, Sonya has grown stronger as a person. Friends and family are of the utmost importance to her. And at only 23 years old, she still likes to have fun, having a particular taste for extreme sports and sky-diving. She is a kind heart, but has a nasty temper if pushed the wrong way. Being a Benedict, she's naturally a highly competitive individual. While she won't cheat, she doesn't have any problems with going "hardcore". And while her track record in the past with more hardcore fights isn't so good, Sonya has clearly grown a preference for it. She respects her opponents, but only after they've earned it.
Entrance Music: "Wish I Had An Angel" by Nightwish
Entrance Sequence:
[Turquoise lights come on, joining the venue's regular entrance lights as Nightwish's former lead singer Tarja Turunen sings the opening lines of "Wish I Had An Angel", accompanied by quiet electronics.]
# I WISH I HAD AN ANGEL FOR ONE MOMENT OF LOVE,
I WISH I HAD YOUR ANGEL TONIGHT. #
[Electric guitars and drums then kick in, soon followed by Tarja and more of her operatic singing. But more importantly, the entrance curtains are shoved dramatically out to the sides and "Twilight Angel" Sonya Benedict steps out onto the stage, flashbulbs going off all around the building. She's dressed in her standard ring gear: a turquoise with black trimmed sports bra, fine fishnets covering her arms and upper torso, and forest green camouflage shorts. She rounds out her gear with black kneepads and boots, with turquoise laces on the boots. Raising both of her fists in the air, brown eyes fixed on the ring, she then abruptly throws her clenched fists down in one quick motion to a big face pop from the crowd. Finally she makes her way down the ramp, working the crowd all the way. As the music continues, Sonya ascends the ringsteps and slingshot front flips into the ring, landing perfectly on her feet with both fists raised high once more. Bringing them back down abruptly in the same fashion as before, she then stretches on the ropes as "Wish I Had An Angel" fades out and the lights return to normal.]
Movelist: Front Kick, Side Kick, Spinning Roundhouse Kick, Back Kick, Reverse Hook Kick, Sweep Kick, Various Tae-Kwon-Do Strikes (to nose, chin, chest, shoulder, anywhere on upper body), Yakuza Kick to the Face, Sharp Kick/Stomp to Knee Cap (while opponent stands), Headbutt (often to the bridge of the nose), Shining Wizard (or a Van Daminator-style Shining Wizard, kneeing a chair into the face), Uraken (Spinning Backfist), Uppercut, Shoulder Jawbreaker, Moonsault, Slingshot Legdrop, Pescada (Catapult Body Press Suicida), Plancha (Cross Body Block), Any other Suicide Dives (out to the floor), Catapult Somersault Senton, Springboard Enzuigiri, Springboard Moonsault into Inverted DDT (with NO delay), Thesz Press followed by Mounted Punches, Discus Clothesline
Signature Moves:
Burning Sunset (Double Leg Back Piledriver, often used as a third finisher)
Psycho Driver (Argentine Back Breaker Rack Piledriver)
Meteor Blast (Flying Jawbreaker - Leap off top turnbuckle and come down executing Jawbreaker on standing opponent)
Shortened Reverse Hurricanrana (spiking the opponent on the back of their head!)
Dawn of Chaos (Springboard Moonsault into Fist Drop, most often done from the apron down to the floor, though she can also do a Moonsault Suicida variation from inside the ring over the top rope to the floor!)
Finisher:
PRIMARY FINISHER:
Black Halo (Fireman's Carry into Stunner) - Sonya hoists an opponent onto her shoulders in a standing fireman's carry. From there, she releases their legs, and while still holding their head, swings their body around to behind hers. Then, as her opponent begins to fall behind her, Sonya applies a 3/4 facelock and drops down to a seated position, driving her opponent's chin into her shoulder.
SECONDARY FINISHER:
Eventide - She snaps out a stiff kick to the side of her opponent's face (the inside of the foot as the impact area), then once that foot hits the ground, she does a spinkick with the other leg, cracking her opponent in the same spot with the heel of her other foot.
Strengths:
1) Temper - Like her cousin Jacen, Sonya's temper is both quick and ferocious. And when she's pushed too far, she snaps, taking that ferociousness to a whole 'nother level. Basically, she goes berzerk, not caring even about her own well-being as she seeks to destroy her enemy. This proves to be an advantage as it increases her focus and tolerance for pain.
2) Tremendous Speed - Although naturally a brawler, Sonya has some awesome speed, allowing her to perform some high impact aerial maneuvers and make it hard for her opponents to get a hold of her.
3) Never-Say-Die Attitude - A mere 22 years of age, Sonya is no quitter. She believes wholeheartedly in the notion that nothing should be left unfinished. Therefore, she leaves nothing to spare when she competes.
4) Insanely Stiff Kicks - While Sonya was trained in the use of both arms and legs for striking, her legs are without a doubt her strongest asset, as she combines awesome accuracy and unmatched force in every kick she snaps off. Add to that her tremendous speed and her kicks are snapped out so fast that they're almost impossible to block or evade.
Weaknesses:
1) Never-Say-Die Attitude - Never the quitter, Sonya will give 110% even when her own personal well-being is on the line. This attitude may eventually result in injury.
2) Size - While a good 5'6" and 133 lbs, Sonya is a long way from being one of the bigger women in the industry. And while she's reasonably strong for her size, enabling her to pull off some big piledrivers, she doesn't come close to that of some of the bigger women around.
3) Total Ineptitude in Technical Wrestling Knowledge - Sonya has absolutely no knowledge or understanding of technical and mat wrestling. She has no hope in Hell of blocking or countering such moves and holds. So you will never see her try a suplex or submission hold unless she trains in the style down the road. But she feels very clumsy with the style as is, so likely won't be too eager to learn it.
4) Temper - Like her cousin Jacen, Sonya's temper is both quick and ferocious. And when she's pushed too far, she snaps, taking that ferociousness to a whole 'nother level. Basically, she goes berzerk, not caring even about her own well-being as she seeks to destroy her enemy. This proves to be a disadvantage as she may tolerate pain more, resulting in injury. Plus her actions could get her disqualified from matches, or even suspended from competition. And in this kind of mood, she's prone to being more snappy towards those she cares about.
Wrestlers Comparable To: Sabu, Super Dragon, and MsChif - though without their technical wrestling knowledge.
